OnBaseU Performance Chiropractic: Integrating Movement Assessment & Performance Modalities

This comprehensive introduction to the OnBaseU Performance Model provides chiropractors and allied health professionals with an integrated framework for combining chiropractic care, movement assessment, corrective exercise, and advanced recovery strategies to elevate athletic performance and rehabilitation.

Participants will learn to identify movement dysfunction, evaluate mobility, stability, and motor control, and apply evidence-informed strategies across the rehabilitation-to-performance continuum. Emphasis will be placed on practical clinical application, including hands-on assessment, chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue interventions, corrective exercise progressions, and the strategic integration of advanced recovery technologies such as neuromuscular electrical stimulation, photobiomodulation, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, compression, percussion, and other performance modalities.

The Scouting Report

Dr. Sean Drake is a sports health and performance specialist dedicated to optimizing movement, recovery, and nervous system regulation for athletes and high performers. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Florida State University, a Master’s in Sports Health Science with a specialization in Sports Injury Management and Human Performance, and his Doctorate in Chiropractic from Life University.

Throughout his career, Dr. Drake has worked with a diverse range of clients, from recreational athletes and business executives to professionals across the MLB, NFL, NBA, PGA, LPGA, ATP, AVP, and X Games. He has served as Team Doctor for Nitro Circus and the Dew Tour and has consulted with professional and amateur teams on performance, recovery, and overall well-being.

A former Vice President of OnBaseU and RacquetFit, Dr. Drake helped develop movement assessment systems designed for rotational athletes. In addition to his clinical and performance work, he teaches breathwork and nervous system training to help individuals improve resilience, recovery, and performance.

Today, Dr. Drake is the founder of Moderne Athlete and a peer-reviewed author with Biohack Yourself, where he continues to advance science-backed strategies designed to unlock athletic potential and support long-term performance.

Nick's Session Playbook

Presentation In Kansas:
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome:
Diagnosis and Management of the Various Types

This presentation provides a focused examination of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS), including its primary classifications, underlying causes, and the unique demands that make throwing athletes particularly susceptible to the condition.

Participants will explore practical, non-surgical strategies for managing TOS during the competitive season, with an emphasis on maintaining performance while protecting athlete health. The presentation will also examine the rehabilitation process following surgical intervention, including expected timelines, key recovery milestones, and anticipated return-to-play outcomes.

Special attention will be given to the critical role of communication among the athlete, coaches, management, and the sports medicine team. By aligning clinical findings, performance goals, and organizational expectations, attendees will gain a clearer framework for coordinated decision-making and the delivery of high-level athletic care.

The Scouting Report

Nick Kenney, ATC, CSCS, is in his 17th season with the Kansas City Royals and his fifth as Director of Major League Medical Administration. He previously spent 12 seasons as the organization’s Head Athletic Trainer and Director of Medical Services, playing a central role in the medical care, rehabilitation, and performance support of Major League athletes.

Before joining the Royals, Kenney served five seasons as Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Cleveland Guardians and two seasons in the same role with the Cincinnati Reds. He also served as Program Manager of Sports Medicine for TriHealth, the official medical provider of the Reds, and earlier spent seven seasons as Head Athletic Trainer for the Cincinnati Cyclones professional hockey club of the IHL.

A graduate of Wilmington College in Ohio, Kenney is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS). He currently serves as President of the PBATS Executive Board and has been a member of the board since 2014. He has also served on the MLB Education Committee since 2012.

Kenney was selected to the 2012 American League All-Star medical staff and has been recognized multiple times for excellence in professional sports medicine. His honors include the 2011 Dick Martin Award, the 2013 PBATS Major League Training Staff of the Year Award with the Kansas City Royals, and the 2007 PBATS Major League Training Staff of the Year Award while with Cleveland.

Restoring Joint Function in the Overhead Athlete: Evaluation and Management of the Kinetic Chain

For overhead athletes—including baseball pitchers, quarterbacks, tennis and volleyball players, swimmers, and javelin throwers—successful care requires more than addressing the site of pain. Restoring optimal performance depends on evaluating and improving the entire kinetic chain responsible for transferring force efficiently from the ground through the body to the hand.

Although shoulder pain is often the presenting complaint, the underlying dysfunction may originate elsewhere within the kinetic chain. A comprehensive evaluation considers joint function, soft tissue integrity, tissue repair, and scapular strength and stability to identify the factors limiting movement, force production, and athletic efficiency.

This presentation will focus specifically on joint function and the evaluation of subluxations, with an emphasis on identifying joint restrictions and delivering precise chiropractic adjustments in the appropriate line of correction.

Participants will examine assessment and treatment strategies for the cervical spine using multiple patient positions and techniques, as well as the thoracic spine, rib cage, and shoulder complex—including the glenohumeral, acromioclavicular, and sternoclavicular joints. The goal is to restore mobility, improve kinetic-chain function, and support more efficient, resilient athletic performance.

Dr. Caldwell is one of the nation’s most respected sports chiropractors, with nearly four decades of experience helping elite athletes and performers optimize recovery, resilience, and performance.

A 1987 graduate of Life Chiropractic College, he has served as Team Chiropractor for the Colorado Rockies since 1999, the Denver Broncos from 2004 to 2017, the Denver Nuggets from 2021 to 2026, and the University of Colorado from 2022 to 2026.

Throughout his career, Dr. Caldwell has cared for Academy Award and Emmy Award winners, Heisman Trophy recipients, MLB, NFL, and NBA MVPs, and 16 Hall of Fame athletes. His work has also extended beyond professional sports, providing performance-focused care for artists appearing at some of Denver’s premier music venues.

Dr. Caldwell is the owner of Caldwell Chiropractic Center and Denver Sports Recovery, where he combines decades of clinical experience with advanced recovery and performance strategies.

As an educator and speaker, he brings together practical clinical insight, leadership experience, and compelling stories from nearly 40 years at the highest levels of sport and performance.

This presentation explores the scientific foundations supporting the integration of chiropractic care within the sports performance environment, with a focus on how adjustive interventions may influence joint biomechanics, nervous system function, and neuromuscular control.

Participants will examine research related to brain reaction time, joint position sense, and upper- and lower-extremity motor control, along with the potential implications of these findings for athletic movement and performance.

By connecting current scientific observations with practical clinical application, the presentation will provide a framework for understanding the role chiropractic care may play in supporting injury prevention, movement efficiency, recovery, and overall sports performance.

Dr. Carl S. Cleveland III is President of Cleveland University–Kansas City, home to the College of Chiropractic and College of Health Sciences. A fourth-generation chiropractor, he is the grandson of the University’s founders, Dr. C.S. Cleveland Sr. and Dr. Ruth R. Cleveland.

In addition to leading CUKC into its second century, Dr. Cleveland has held prominent leadership roles throughout the chiropractic profession, including service with the Association of Chiropractic Colleges and the Council on Chiropractic Education.

A longtime member of the American Chiropractic Association, International Chiropractors Association, and American Black Chiropractic Association, Dr. Cleveland is an author, international lecturer, advocate for chiropractic and higher education, and educator with more than 50 years of faculty experience.

He continues to teach the introduction to chiropractic philosophy and science each trimester, carrying forward a family legacy of education, leadership, and service to the profession.

This 30-minute session presents a practical clinical reasoning framework for evaluating and treating multisegmental rotational dysfunction—a movement pattern fundamental to rotational sports such as golf and baseball.

Participants will begin with a multisegmental rotation screen to identify meaningful rotational deficits, then progress to a more specific seated trunk rotation assessment using 50 degrees of bilateral rotation as a clinical benchmark. The lumbar lock position will be introduced as an additional tool to help distinguish mobility-driven limitations from those influenced by stability and motor control.

From assessment, the session will transition into targeted treatment strategies, including evaluation and management of thoracic cage restrictions, assessment and mobilization of restricted oblique musculature, and use of a modified MPI scan to help localize segmental spinal restrictions appropriate for chiropractic adjustment.

Participants will leave with a clear, stepwise, regionally interdependent approach for assessing rotational movement dysfunction, identifying contributing restrictions, and applying more precise treatment strategies to active and athletic patients.

Dr. Stuart McIntosh is a professor at Cleveland University–Kansas City, where he contributes to the Doctor of Chiropractic program with a focus on physiotherapy, rehabilitation, and functional movement.

He earned both his Doctorate of Chiropractic and Master of Science in Sports Science and Rehabilitation from Logan University and is board-certified in chiropractic rehabilitation through the American Chiropractic Rehabilitation Board®.

Dr. McIntosh began his career in private practice before joining CUKC in 2014. He initially served as a full-time clinical educator in the University’s Chiropractic Health Center, overseeing patient care and clinical instruction, before transitioning into his current academic role.

His areas of expertise include functional movement assessment, soft tissue diagnosis and management, and rehabilitation. He also serves on the board of the American Chiropractic Association Rehab Council, contributing to the continued advancement of rehabilitation within the chiropractic profession.

Dr. Greg Williams is Director of Exercise Science Programs at Cleveland University–Kansas City, a role he has held since 2023. He brings more than two decades of experience as an athletic trainer and strength and conditioning professional to his work educating the next generation of healthcare and performance practitioners.

Dr. Williams earned Master of Sports Science degrees in Sports Medicine and Sports Fitness Management from the United States Sports Academy and a PhD in Higher Education Administration from Saint Louis University.

Prior to transitioning into academia, Dr. Williams spent more than 20 years working directly with athletes as an athletic trainer and strength coach. His professional sports experience includes serving as an athletic trainer for the Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League, bringing firsthand experience from the professional baseball environment to his teaching and research.

His research interests include active learning, interprofessional education, health literacy, preceptor development, and the translation of didactic knowledge and clinical reasoning into effective professional practice.

Following his transition to CUKC, Dr. Verburg spent six years as a clinician in the University’s Chiropractic Health Center before moving into his current academic role. His combination of private practice, clinical education, and hands-on technique instruction provides students with a practical connection between foundational chiropractic skills and their application in patient care.

Today, his work in the Technique Simulation Lab incorporates force-sensing technology and objective performance feedback to help students develop greater precision, consistency, and confidence in chiropractic adjusting technique.

Dynamic Motion Sensing Lab Breakout Session

This breakout session explores how wearable motion capture technology can enhance the evaluation and training of rotational athletes, with a specific focus on the use of K-Vest for baseball swing analysis.

Through instructor-led demonstrations and interpretation of actual K-Vest reports, participants will learn how to evaluate key biomechanical variables, including kinematic sequencing, rotational velocities, X-Factor, and other performance metrics that influence movement efficiency and athletic output.

The session will emphasize the clinical and performance application of motion data, helping attendees better understand how objective movement analysis can inform assessment, guide intervention, and support more precise decision-making for rotational athletes.

Dr. Steven Reece is a Doctor of Chiropractic, educator, and movement assessment specialist with expertise in rehabilitation and performance-based care. He serves as an Associate Professor at Cleveland University–Kansas City, where he teaches upper- and lower-extremity case management and functional movement assessment while maintaining an active clinical practice.

Dr. Reece earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Kansas State University and his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Cleveland Chiropractic College. He is an SFMA/FMS Instructor and holds certifications in the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA), Functional Movement Screen (FMS), Titleist Performance Institute (TPI), and OnBaseU.

His work centers on identifying movement dysfunction, optimizing athletic performance, and reducing injury risk through evidence-informed assessment and rehabilitation strategies.

As an educator and clinician, Dr. Reece is committed to translating current research into practical, clinically relevant strategies that help athletes move more efficiently, recover more effectively, and perform at a higher level.
